The Patient Satisfaction Survey is a single-question, patient-reported outcome measure designed to capture overall satisfaction with surgical care. It is based on the widely used Net Promoter Score (NPS) methodology, asking patients how likely they are to recommend their surgeon to others.

Originally it was part of the PROMS survey. However, recently we have made this question an independent survey to better capture patient sentiment at key early stages of post-operative recovery.

By incorporating the Patient Satisfaction Survey into SurgicalPerformance, surgeons gain a consistent, structured measure of patient perception, helping to identify areas of excellence or improvement in the surgical experience.

Who it applies to:

The Patient Satisfaction Survey is relevant to all surgeons using SurgicalPerformance, regardless of specialty or procedure type.

How the Survey Works

Survey structure:

  • The survey includes a single NPS-style question:
“How likely is it that you would recommend your surgeon to a friend or colleague?”

  • Patients respond on a 0–10 scale, where:

    • 0 = Not at all likely

    • 10 = Extremely likely

Scoring approach:

  • Responses are categorised using standard Net Promoter Score methodology.

  • The score reflects patient satisfaction and loyalty, and when tracked over time, can show changes in the perceived quality of care.

  • Results are aggregated and displayed in your SurgicalPerformance dashboard, linked to each patient’s case.

Interpretation:

A high NPS score indicates strong patient satisfaction and a positive care experience. Lower scores may highlight opportunities to review communication, post-operative support or care pathways.

Survey Timing in SurgicalPerformance

When it’s sent:

The Patient Satisfaction Survey is delivered at the following intervals:

  • 2 weeks post-op

  • 6 weeks post-op

How patients receive it:

Patients receive an SMS with a secure survey link at each interval.

Completion details:

The survey takes less than 30 seconds to complete on a smartphone or web-enabled device.

Benefits for Surgeons and Patients

For surgeons:

  • Provides early insight into the patient’s experience of care.

  • Provides an opportunity for the surgeon to contact the patient.

  • Allows for benchmarking and quality improvement across your cases.

  • Complements clinical outcomes with real patient feedback.

  • Supports CPD, reflective practice and audit requirements.

For patients:

  • Offers a simple way to express how they feel about their care.

  • Reinforces that their experience is valued and reviewed.

  • Encourages trust and openness between patient and surgeon.

References & Validation

The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is an internationally recognised measure of customer satisfaction and loyalty, widely adopted in healthcare settings to capture the patient experience.

Studies have shown that early post-op satisfaction is a useful indicator of the overall patient journey and can help guide improvements in communication and care delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can patients use the survey instead of a follow-up appointment?

No. The Patient Satisfaction Survey complements, but does not replace, clinical follow-up consultations.

What if a patient does not complete the survey?

Participation is optional. You may follow up directly, but their clinical care is not affected.

Can I choose when to send this survey?

Survey timing is automated (2 and 6 weeks post-op). You can opt out per case if preferred.

Is patient data secure?

Yes. All responses are encrypted, securely stored, and accessible only to the treating surgeon.

By incorporating the Patient Satisfaction Survey into your SurgicalPerformance workflow, you gain a fast, validated snapshot of how your patients are feeling in the early recovery phase — helping you deliver more informed, patient-centred care.
